Beyond

It’s about emotion!

If you’re expecting Quantic Dreams’ Beyond: Two souls to play similarly to the company’s last game, Heavy Rain, then you’re probably going to get what you expect. If you’re the sort of gamer who thinks Heavy Rain barely qualified as a game – then Beyond’s probably not going to tickle your fancy either.

Speaking to Edge, Quantic Dream’s David Cage has said he’s more focused on “creating an emotional journey,” than creating something “fun” to play.

“I don’t want to challenge their thumbs, I want to challenge their minds,” he said. “My goal is to surprise people, to give them something they want without knowing they want it. I want to create an emotional journey, a unique experience.

“I am not interested in giving them ‘fun’, I want to give them meaning; I don’t want to challenge their thumbs, I want to challenge their minds.”

He says the game (game?) will allow players to build up a relationship with Jodie Holmes, played by Ellen Page – as you’ll be interacting as her through 15 years of her life.

“Maybe this is irrelevant or just overly ambitious,” he said. “Maybe this is not what most people out there actually want. But this is the goal I set myself with Beyond: to create something different.”

Which side of the fence are you on? Did you think Heavy Rain was an opus in video game storytelling, or are you the sort that thinks it was little more than a marginally interactive pretentious cut-scene? As mush as I think the psychobabbling Cage is more than a tad pretentious, the hipster in me is really looking forward to Beyond.
