Batman Arkham Origins multiplayer won’t be tacked on

Multiplayer

Batman: Arkham Origins has a new developer in charge of the franchise, in the form of Warner Bros Montreal. With that change, comes new ideas for the game. Such as a multiplayer component that is being created by Splash Damage in tandem with the game. Will it be a cheap, quick experience though?

Speaking to OXM, creative director Alastair Cornish explained that the new multiplayer side of the game wouldn’t be a cheap experience that was there for the sake of it. “It’s something that we bore in mind; there can often be cynicism in some quarters – not in others – about this. And I think the two things that are very important to stress there are – these are being developed in parallel, so the single player is being developed by Warner Bros. Montreal, with no kind of interference or distraction from Splash Damage, who have been purely creating the multiplayer component,” Cornish said.

It’s the same disc and it’s a component of the same product, but neither one has distracted or detracted from the other. And we’ve worked together to ensure consistency of tone, because they’re the same Arkhamverse and in the same fictional window.

So that was the first thing – if it’s the same team doing both, then I think it’s a bit more understandable that people have reservations, to be like “well hold on, can’t those guys be making me more single player levels instead?” so it was important that there were two separate studios, both playing to their strengths.

Cornish also said that having multiplayer would help evolve the series, something it needed to take a step forward. “It was a discussion about, what would the natural growth of the franchise be like? And it’s a really cool premise! That simple premise of, hold on, what would invisible predator be like if you were stalking other human players? And again, not just gang members but elite gang members.”

So those kind of “what if” questions, the questions that we asked ourselves about how we could evolve that really strong pillar of the single player, just made sense and led to the fantastic asymmetrical gameplay that we’ve got now.

And as, as I say, unique and distinct and worthwhile in itself. Because you’re right, no-one wanted it to feel like something that was tacked on or that took away from the single player at all, and I’m really happy that its developed the way that it is because that is absolutely not the case. It’s a distinct offering from a distinct studio.

I’m slowly warming up the idea of of the online content, and I think that Predator mode could genuinely work in an online environment. But then again, I am completely bias when it comes to the Dark Knight. Arkham Origins is out soon. on October 25 for PC,PS3,Xbox 360 and Wii U.

I meant porting like the first Dark Souls! I see your TROLL and raise you a ‘console control interface on PC’ BOOM!

            September 19, 2013 at 13:18

You know the ported Dark Souls came with extra content, enhanced features & a lower price right? *smacks the BOOM! out of the park like a boss*

Plus, by implication, you just conceded the console control interface is inferior 😀

Enhanced features?! It was a buggy bloody mess! And console controls don’t work on a PC, when you use the EXACT SAME LAYOUT BWAHAHA! Like YOUR boss! BOOM!

            September 19, 2013 at 13:30

You think I use a console controller on my PC? O_O -_- O_O

Oh my, I do believe I must go lie down, this rascal’s vicious innuendos have given me the vapours!

No man. The first instance of the game literally still had like a red B button on the screen, as it was ported directly from the consoles. So it would say ‘press A (green round button) to do this or that!

Heh I know, I’m just choosing to ignore that fact because it’s inconvenient 😛

Don’t even get me started on how it needs a 3rd party mod to run at 1920×1080. DS really is the epitome of a shitty port 😉
