Batman: Arkham Knight won’t be suitable for kids

He may have started out as a comic book character for kids over seven decades ago, but the Batman of today ain’t exactly child-friendly. The world’s greatest detective is also equally fluent in the language of broken bones, a Brakpan dialect wherein asking for a cup of coffee involves using a tombstone piledriver to slam you through a table. Naturally, the next Batman game isn’t going to suitable for all ages. In fact, it’s going to be a lot more mature than the man-child in Batman underwear who is busy writing this story.

Batman: Arkham Knight has been rated M for yo momma mature, which is an age rating upgrade from previous Batman games. Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Arkham Origins all carried “T for Teen” ratings back when those games were released. Games that included Joker goons being punched in the junk, Batman being thrown through walls and Bane taking a Batmobile to the gut. Pretty violent stuff, but more along the lines of the PG-13 content that you’d see in movies.

“From our point of view, we never wrote it or made it with a rating in mind. We never did that in the previous two games… We just felt that this is the story that we really wanted to tell” game director Sefton Hill said to IGN, explaining how making the game more “mass market” could have potentially impacted negatively on the story that developer Rocksteady wanted to tell.

I’m not blind to the fact that [the M rating] does mean some fans will miss out… I don’t want to be oblivious to that fact. It would have been wrong to water down the game and deliver a story we didn’t believe in to keep the game ‘mass market’ or enable it for more people. We feel that’s the wrong way to go about it. We said we love the story and we don’t want to jeopardize that.

Makes sense to me. While Batman has always been surgically violent in a fight, aiming to never kill, he has been involved in some brutal moments throughout his career. In fact, I’m going to end this story with one of my favourite fights, right from The Dark Knight Returns Part 1:

Batman: Arkham Knight is out in June on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Sadly, it seems to me you are wrong. I see tenny-agers in malls, having meals and paying with cards afterwards. Presumably linked to daddy’s account. Like my wife has full access to all my money and I have no access to hers.

Indeed. But a bit broke at the moment. Major, major expenses, like swimming pool fence, new engine built for car, unexpected holiday stuff, car hire, paying to tow car from Western Cape to Pretoria, that sort of thing. At the moment, she is more than welcome to have all of it.
