I'd pay to watch this movie.

There’s a new world of gaming just on the horizon. As influential as big budget titles have been over the last decade, it seems that a new field is emerging, one comprised of smaller teams, budgets and crowd-sourcing initiatives. Assassin’s Creed 3 is the result of one laborious process however, a three year development that cost millions and had hundreds of staff members working on it, something that creative director Alex Hutchinson refers likens it to being “the last of the dinosaurs”.

Talking to Edge, Hutchinson elaborated more on his view that the upcoming game was part of a dying breed of titles that required so many resources and people to work on them, due to the sheer scale of the project. “We’re the last of the dinosaurs. We’re still the monster triple-A game with very large teams [and] multiple studios helping out on different bits. There are fewer and fewer of these games being made, especially as the middle has fallen out.”

We really felt like this was a rare opportunity, We had an experienced team, who had worked on the franchise for a while; we had the full backing of Ubisoft to make something huge.

We had almost three years to do it, which is a rarity these days; the tech and the hardware platforms were both mature, which allowed us to start running instead of building base features; and the installed user base for all platforms is massive.

Many of these factors are about to change, by choice of circumstance, so a lot of us truly believed this was a once in a career opportunity.

Personally, I don’t see big budget games disappearing anytime soon. If you’ve got a product to sell, in a competitive market such as the games industry, then you have to make damn sure that it’s a good one at that, and a game such as that requires time and money.

Maybe Assassin’s Creed 3 is the last of the giant games requiring a multi-year development cycle, but seeing as how many other such titles require at least two years to go from concept to concrete, that’s still quite a while to wait.
