Remember how the US Senate is looking at doing a study about violent video games? Well, now it appears that Activision-Blizzard is preparing to fight the good fight in politics – they have hired a lobbying firm.
Activision-Blizzard has retained the services of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld LLP, an established lobbying firm. On the registration documents, the lobbying issues are listed as “Art”. This may imply that we will see lobbying activities in the area of free speech, I’m not entirely convinced. Looking at the profile of Akin et al, it seems that they deal more with mergers and acquisitions, finance and intellectual property.
It makes me wonder what sort of results Activision-Blizzard are expecting from the US Senate’s bill to study violent video games. Are there signs of bans and restrictions? Could this have an impact on the intellectual property? If the US goes the way of Australia and restricts media, what impact will it have on studios aiming to develop these games? There are strong laws and regulations in the States against censorship of artistic expression. However, if the study finds that violent games are a matter of public health, companies like Activision-Blizzard may find themselves needing to defend their right to make these games.
I still can’t believe we continue to have these debates about violence in gaming. What about those studies that say that video games have reduced violent crimes because there aren’t as many bored youths roaming the streets? What about the anecdotal evidence of people who use gaming to blow off steam, thereby averting potentially violent outbursts? I’m glad that Activision-Blizzard is preparing for whatever comes, but I’m very nervous about what new rules, restrictions and insanity we can look forward to from the US Senate.

It’s not just them. They are more pissesed off at the social implications of the book. Violence in movies was already tackled, same with TV. It ended in the ratings systems. Same with music, same with books. Every new form of entertainment goes through this. Because people are always looking for something to blame.
This argument hasn’t worked yet, and I don’t expect it to now. If Dee Snyder (Twisted Sister) can formulate a coherent and passionate argument in support of music (PMRC hearings in the 80’s), I’m more than certain a person like Mark Cerny could butcher a Congressional Committee.

But seriously though, game violence has been a hot topic for a couple of years now, and much like with the PMRC music hearings, back in the day, the senate just wants to be seen to be doing something. I doubt there’s any real teeth behind this move, rather than a couple of Senators putting on a political roadshow – to show a certain segment of the population that they “gosh darn it… really care”….
If gaming didn’t exist, movies or TV would have been the target, or donkey carts… because of how fast teens and youngens drive their donkey carts…

Look, my parents never really played watchdogs when it came to the movies I watched as a kid. The only movie they told me I could not watch was Basic Instinct. But Rambo? Commando? Terminator? Friday the 13th? They were all so cool with it, and I grew up to be a very well adjusted person. I know that today it is different. Violence in Video Games is far “worse” now that it has ever been. So why can I not expect a parent to be more involved in Timmy’s choice of entertainment?

The problem there is alcohol is sold for most parts in specialized stores. I am sure that if I send in a 12 year old to go buy a box of wine at Spar the cashiers there won’t even blink when they take the money.

I honestly do not think there is. The FPB slaps a sticker on a box and that is it. Have you ever heard of a store getting into trouble for selling age restricted games to minors. Gaming is still seen as a kids only entertainment medium. That is the problem and will always be the problem.

I like violent and gory games. I like violent and gory movies. I like violent and gory anime.
When I watch violent and gory images from movies, games and anime, I will say, OMG, followed by a laugh, because what I am viewing translates as not real!!! Violent and gory movies, games and anime, which is not real, has zero emotional and psychological effect on me, except for cool or stupid images on screen. It’s not real!!! how many times can one say that?
Real violence in our society has a major impact on our communities and on our selves.
When I see real people dieing. When I see real people going through malnutrition. When I see how these big corporations and governments that holds human life with no regard. Real people going through real bad times because of other real people, has a 100% more emotional and psychological effect than all of the non real violent games ever made.
Recently a truck hit 2 taxis and a car killing 22 people. That image was shown on the news. Those images had 100% greater emotional and psychological impact on people than any non real video game ever made.
But the argument goes that violent video games (not real) turns people violent. But those arguments never speak about the real emotional and psychological impacts that would make someone kill another person, such as, bad parenting,(real), bad living environment (real), bad friends (real), bad neighborhood (real), bad government (real), ect.
This big push against violent video games is a distraction from the real issues, that needs to be addressed in this world.
