No-DRM

My fellow South Africans! Election season is coming up and it’ll be time to cast your vote. And we all know that the Lazygamer party is the only party worth voting for. We’re dangerously unqualified, possibly genocidal and sexually attracted to nuclear weapons. And much like Witcher 3 devs CDPR, we’re running our entire campaign without DRM. Read my lips! No DRM!

That’s what you can expect from The Witcher 3 at least, as CDPR has promised no DRM on the game. Ever. For those of you who don’t know what Digital Rights Management is, think of it as anti-piracy measure that somehow manages to shaft paying customers every single time.

“Hey, following our recent announcement of the distribution deals of The Witcher 3 in North America and Europe, there have been some concerns regarding DRM and previous legal issues with The Witcher 2,” Marcin Iwinski, boss of Witcher developer CD Projekt Red, wrote in a blog post.

I’d like to say it loud and clear: The PC version of The Witcher 3 will have absolutely no DRM from day 0. Zero. Zip. Nada. It doesn’t matter if you choose to buy it on GOG.com and support us directly or buy the game in box format, you’ll still get the 100% DRM-free experience. And this goes for the whole world.

There is a caveat to this though. If you happen to be buying the game on Steam, there’ll still be some of that control in place from the house of Newell, as CDPR clarified the matter to Kotaku:

It’ll be on Steam; the team isn’t going to exclude that community by any means. Gamers have a choice in where they buy their games, but where CDPR does have control — like GOG.com — there will be absolutely no DRM.

It’s goodwill like that which has ensured CDPR a whole lotta love from gamers.

Special at BT Games, or Steam Summer Sale most likely. Unless they’re feeling generous on GoG.

This is the one game I want to pre-order. No waiting for sales this time.

Then just go GoG, because it’ll be the same price and its better to support the guys at CDPR directly.

I’ll saw your legs off and replace them with shiny new ones made of gold if you vote for me.

That sounds oddly unpleasant. You should make that your offer if people don’t vote for you.

Look, vote for me and at least “someone” will get their legs sawed off. And replaced with something better.

You know he’d just end up selling those legs and spending the rest of his life gaming right? What will we tell the kids?

Too funny man, too funny. hahaha 😀

The answer won’t be great for your campaign though, “Because he voted for Darryn, and Darryn gave him solid gold legs.” Actually. That works for you. Carry on then.

I love these guys. They make great games. They feed our nostalgia with great games. And they look out for us gamers. Many people will buy from them rather than pirate because they love them.

I’d bet a fair few pirates do so because of DRM. Not all, because pirates will be pirates.
